Sexual Assault Awareness Month Community Speak-Out

The fight to end sexual violence in northeast Florida will take center stage in Downtown Jacksonville to kick off Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM).

A Community Speak-Out is scheduled for Tuesday, April 5 at 10 a.m. in HEMMING PLAZA in downtown Jacksonville. IN THE EVENT OF INCLEMENT WEATHER, THE EVENT WILL BE HELD NEXT DOOR, DIRECTLY INSIDE CITY HALL.

The Jacksonville RollerGirls (JRG) presents Jacksoville’s first professional WFTDA roller derby bout.  JRG home team River City Rat Pack will battle Hard Knox Rollergirls “B” Team, following with JRG’s all-star New Jax City Rollers skating against Hard Knox Rollergirls “A” team. With the UNF Arena able to hold thousands of fans, this will undoubtedly be JRG’s biggest and most exciting bout to date. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the first bout will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the second at 7:30. Tickets are $10.00 in advance or $12.00 at the door. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Skate Bomb in Jacksonville Beach,, or from one of your local roller derby girls.

Gleeks everywhere are busy making summer plans as “Glee” star and Mercury Records artist Matthew Morrison announced today a major summer tour that will feature songs from his forthcoming album along with many of the Glee fan favorites. In tribute to the great glee clubs across the country, the tour (in conjunction with the VH1 Save The Music Foundation) will offer regional glee clubs the chance to compete for the ‘opening act’ performance slot. A classic movie is shown outdoors under the stars in Jacksonville Beach.  Visitors bring picnic blankets and baskets, lawn chairs and pets to really make an evening out of it.  Vendors set up to sell food and beverages, as well as there is a kids’ entertainment zone for families.  Event is free.  Screenings begin at 9 p.m.

Downtown Jacksonville’s series is returning to historic Treaty Oak Park Fridays in the spring. Hosted by Downtown Vision, Inc. and JaxParks, the series features four family-friendly movies shown under the stars, each beginning at dusk (around 8 p.m.) on the land that once served as the setting for numerous silent films. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets, lawn chairs and picnic dinners ordered “to-go” from one of the many Downtown restaurants. Music and kids lawn games will keep moviegoers busy before each show. Vendors will also sell concessions onsite. Movie: The Wizard of Oz.
